The Curriculum

Child in gardenThe curriculum is concerned with the development of children. Everything that your child does, sees, hears, touches, smells and tastes is the curriculum because this is the way she/he learns about their world.

At the Centre we provide high quality inclusive care and education for all our children. From 3 months to 3 years we use “Birth to Three Matters” which is a framework to support children in their earliest years. For children from 3 to 5 years we follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage that continues to the end of the reception year in the Primary School.

"Children learn at a very good rate because of exceptional teaching and an imaginative, exciting curriculum" Ofsted, 2007

We believe there are very strong links between children’s motivation, self-esteem and independence, which lead to high achievement.  Play is a very important part of all children’s development and at the Centre we offer a safe and stimulating environment where children can build their skills, knowledge and understanding by having access to a wide range of equipment and materials.

For children from 3 months to 3 years we focus on four aspects of the young child’s development:

  • a strong child
  • a skilful communicator
  • a competent learner
  • a healthy child

If you would like to know more about the Birth to Three Matters Framework, please ask a member of staff in Nursery 1 or 2.

For 3 – 5 year olds the Areas of Learning for the Foundation Stage are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematical Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

Each Area of Learning in the Foundation Stage has a number of Early Learning Goals, which sets out what children should achieve by the end of the reception year in the Primary School. We aim to help children to progress to these Early Learning Goals through carefully planned activities. Children have access to a range of activities and are encouraged to make their own choices and decisions.

Children’s Spiritual and Moral development is an important aspect of their whole development. We foster this through giving the children opportunities to share in the wonder of the world, for example looking at the beauty around them, a new baby, animals, flowers, shells and helping them to understand and develop a responsibility towards their friends, other people and the environment.
